Eskom will be implementing Stage 2 load-shedding from Wednesday 02 January due to the shortage of generation capacity. On Tuesday, Eskom warned that the power station is facing some difficulties. Electricity needed to be sparingly at that point.

Eskom implements load-shedding on short notice

This news comes two generators have tripped. As a result, Eskom has depleted its emergency resources. In order to prevent a national blackout, Eskom said it had to implement load-shedding at short notice. According to The Citizen, the national grid does not have enough backup generation capacity to prevent a national blackout.

At this time, Eskom is confident that they’ll be able to replenish the country’s power reserves. The power facility did warn that a further loss of generating capacity will result in load-shedding.

Readiness for planned outages

Three generating units are expected to return to service by this afternoon. However, the emergency generating units are still running dangerously low.

Maintenance has not been done speedily. As a result, we have a power crisis on our hands. The sacrifice of maintenance on old infrastructure needs to be a priority but the power company relays that this will be a financial problem as they have waited too long.

Now, given the current electricity crisis, the increase in petrol prices has exacerbated this situation. De Ruyter added that there needs to be a readiness when the country experiences outages.

Thus far, there is no evidence of sabotage. The power utility has invested over 40 million in security over sabotage incidents.
