HIV has been studied for over a decade and a cure could not exactly be found. Recent studies show that a stem transplant now helps the body fight this deadly virus.

While this study is incredibly significant, only individuals with Leukemia are able to get this treatment. The New York resident was first diagnosed with HIV in 2013. And as many would know, this disease attacks the immune system and makes the body vulnerable to several other diseases.

HIV Cure breakthrough

As the body weakens as a result of the disease, the New Yorker who is said to be of mixed race had to deal with another illness. Four years later, she was stuck with Leukemia. She has since undergone treatment for her Leukemia through a stem cell transplant.

As reported by Sky News, the patient has been free from both illnesses for nearly fourteen months and Scientists feel that they have actually had a breakthrough in their studies regarding the HIV virus.

Leukemia free for four years

This treatment is the first treatment that uses the blood of an umbilical cord. As a result, umbilical cords will now be collected even though it was once thought useless. This treatment, however, is extremely high risk and will only be adopted in patients with Leukemia.

The middle-aged woman who had undergone this treatment has also been in remission from her Leukemia for four years. This study has been presented at the Conference for Retroviruses as a previous case for two men had also been successful.

Presently, experts relay that the patient will be closely monitored as though the virus could appear again. While this may be the case, researchers have now found other grounds in which to create the cure for HIV.
