Lung x-rays for Saffas visiting UK

Now see what SA's insecure passports have landed us in – yet again. From 2013 all South Africans seeking visas for the United Kingdom for stays of longer than six months will need to undergo tuberculosis tests. Our dear friends at the UK Border Agency boast on their website that SA is one of the 67 countries who has a high incidence of tuberculosis.

Lung x-rays for Saffas visiting UK

It says that only applicants who submit an online visa application form and pay the visa application fee before 31 December 2012 would not need to take a tuberculosis test. A bit late now – we suppose.

South Africans did not need visas to visit the UK, but so many people entered the UK with false SA passports over the years that the UK government warned SA to get its “passport house” in order. This was not done, which effectively forced the UK to enforce a strict visa regime onto South Africans wanting to visit loved ones in the UK or needing to do business in the financial capital of the world.

UK visas are extremely expensive running well over R1000 and now applicants will also have to carry the costs of the tests, which involve x-rays to the chest.
