Infrastructure is not being maintained and services are the worst of any province in South Africa. Now it has also emerged that 42,000 jobs between the third and fourth quarters of 2014 have been lost in the province.
According to figures released by Statistics South Africa the Western Cape (12,000) was the only other province to shed jobs over this period. The official unemployment rate in the Eastern Cape is 22.9%.
The figures show that employment in Agriculture in the province stood at 88,000 in the fourth quarter. Employment in the manufacturing sector in the Eastern Cape was at 135,000.
Despite major construction work in the industrial development zones and elsewhere, such as Baywest, employment in this sector actually shrank by 18,000.
Interestingly enough, the number of people employed by private households in the Eastern Cape increased marginally to 116,000.
