Temperatures dropped to an all-time low across South Africa on Thursday night – and some areas were even covered in snow. People living in parts of the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal woke up to snowcapped mountains, thick frost and slippery roads.
On Thursday, temperatures dropped to a low of -7.5°C in Postmasburg in the Northern Cape and below freezing in most of the mountainous areas across South Africa.
The cold that swept over Johannesburg was recorded as the coldest day in 10 years – and the big freeze is expected to continue into the weekend.
If you are travelling on roads close to the areas where snow fell, be extra cautious. Black ice occurs on roads when ice freezes over and it cannot be seen which is extremely dangerous for road users.
