Spot the pig as SA politicians turn to farming

If you want to know something about a person, go and see how they treat their animals, the saying goes. If this is true, what does this latest piece of breaking news say about South Africa's newly elected National Council of Provinces chairperson Thandi Modise (above)?

Spot the pig as SA politicians turn to farming

Police and SPCA officials made a gruesome discovery of severe animal neglect when they were called to Modise’s Modderfontein farm in Potchefstroom where farm animals were left without food and water for up to two weeks. They found 58 dead pigs with the remaining 85 cannibilising on rotting carcasses and drinking their own urine. The farm also had 16 goats, sheep, chickens and geese – all of which were neglected. Dozens of animals had to be euthanised.

News24 reports this is not the first time a politician has been in hot water over a farming incident. In January this year, the SPCA in Kimberley warned the deputy minister of mineral resources, Godfrey Oliphant, to clean up his pig farm at Warrenton, in the Northern Cape, or face losing the animals.
