We are good at looking ahead at our goals and dreams and looking back at our failures. Consequently we end up never looking back at how much we have actually achieved.
Write down all your big achievements. This will remind you of how capable you are. What you had to go through to achieve them. The obstacles you overcame. And that you got there in the end.
Use this list when you are being challenged, to remind yourself that you have got through tough times before and can do it again.
Then make a list of your smaller achievements. This reminds you that you didn’t just suddenly arrive at a goal, but that you have taken little steps everyday to get to where you are now. These are therefore just as important as the big achievements.
This reminds you, in this quick fix and results driven world we live in, that you need patience and perseverance to get you to where you want to be.
Finally the past is often associated with failures so people are afraid to look back. But if there was ever a reason to reflect, this would be it. How can you move forward if you haven’t learnt from the mistakes of your past? Learn from your failures so that you reduce the risk of making the same mistakes again. Now take these lessons with you into the New Year.
By focussing on your achievements and the lessons you have learnt, you will be better equipped at facing the New Year and setting more realistic goals.
Coaching can help you gain clarity and perspective in your life.
