Immigration minister Damian Green confirmed the government will bring forward the planned recruitment of the 70 new border staff. The reason they will be appointed shortly after the London 2012 Olympic Games is because this is when the UK is expecting an even greater influx of visitors. Original plans were to recruit the staff when Terminal 2 reopens in 2014. Some 480 extra UK Border Force staff will be on duty for the Olympics alone.
Now let’s hope at least halve of them gets trained to work on the counters for non-EU arrivals. We all know how long the queues are for non-EU citizens while the EU passport holders literally stroll though customs.
