Many parents feel obligated to teach their children life skills from a very young age but does this really work in all situations? This is why teaching your child to read is counterproductive.

While there aren’t enough studies to confirm that it does work, others have confirmed that children only learn the most important comprehension tools in Grade 3.

Teaching to read too early won’t be a upperhand in academics

If you teach your child to read at an early age or before they start attending school, this won’t put them at a disadvantage at all. This is through the fact that children’s reading ability starts to even out a certain stage.

Additionally, teaching your children to read before the start of school is not as beneficial as children at this stage are unable to retain these skills, and teaching them at this time will defeat the purpose of reading.

Bringing the creativity out of your children

However, it is not an entirely bad idea to teach your children to read if you really feel that you want to. Having little ones look at the pictures in books is one of the ways you can bring out the creativity in them as they interpret what happens in the picture.

Now, reading to your children is just as effective in helping them learn new words. At the same time, if at a certain point your children find it difficult to comprehend a text, it might be time to look at the reasons why your children might be struggling to read.

So, teaching your child to read before school really has nothing to do with having the upper hand in their academics but it also wouldn’t hurt to get them some books to read.

One of the advantages however of teaching your child to read can spark their curiosity and improve their listening skills which can be a long-term advantage in their academics.
