The South African Police say doors and windows should be locked when retiring for the night. “The safety and security of our citizens is a priority and we encourage the community to assist us in our fight against crime by taking proactive measures.”
The statement was released after a death in Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay, this week. A robbery suspect was found dead in a lodge after entering and holding up two elderly men in the early hours of this morning (26/01).
According to police information, the men aged 85 and approx. 65 years old were asleep at a lodge in Union Road Walmer when they were awakened at about 04:20 by someone in their room. The suspect, approx. 30 years old confronted them with a knife and attacked the men. The younger victim was stabbed several times on his face while they were attempting to apprehend the suspect. The suspect was eventually overpowered and the victims tied up the suspect to avoid further attack.
Police was alerted and on arrival found the suspect was found in the room, already dead. The cause of the death is unknown and will be determined by a post mortem. Police are investigating a case of house robbery and an inquest docket was opened in respect of the suspect’s death. A cell phone belonging to one of the men was found in the suspect’s pocket. Both victims were taken to hospital for treatment. The victims are from Gauteng.
