Fake holiday accommodation scams in South Africa

Holidaymakers have been warned to be 100% sure what they are doing when they book seaside accommodation for the Christmas holidays.

Various websites in South Africa are riddled with examples of families who have been taken for the piss by so-called renting agencies. Like the one Gauteng family who arrived in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, to find they had no accommodation booked. They booked and paid for their “oliday home” on Gumtree and OLX.

Now wannabe holidaymakers have been urged to be 100% sure who they are dealing with – to avoid, well, let’s call it disappointment – and parting with your hard earned cash.

Like Gerrie Botha, Charl Dorchester and William Whirlsmith – who are some of the agent names being mentioned by the people who have been conned. Fake website offers accommodation in several coastal cities as well as Mpumalanga.

So if you book your next holiday make sure that you are booking with the owners of the property or official agents. Verify their details in any way you can it’s better to be safe than sorry as the scammers will only get better. One good example is make sure they are sending you an email from an official private domain, eg. an agent from his website and not an gmail or other free email address.

Do you have any advice on verifying accommodation offered? Please share with a comment below then we will publish a HOW TO section at a later date.
