BusinessTech reports they have spoken to the South African Department of Home Affairs who claim visa-free travel to the EU is still currently “in the works”, following a proposal by Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba to European Union Ambassador Marcus Cornaro in September last year.
According to Gigaba, the EU was looking at the relaxation or elimination of its visa requirements for South African passport holders. The reported measures being looked at include the feasibility of multiple-entry visas for SA business travellers to the EU, as well as full exemptions for South African leisure travellers.
Gigaba, the same man that introduced ridiculous visa regulations on New Zealanders trying to visit South Africa, reportedly said the new regulations could be introduced as early as March this year (Now there is a bet we can easily win – Ed).
In a follow-up on the new proposals, home affairs spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete told BusinessTech hat visa-free travel for South Africans to EU countries is still currently a possibility. i
Tshwete said that the department had officially submitted its proposal for the relaxed travel regulations to the EU, and that it was awaiting feedback – expected “within the coming months”.
