Although meditation has its origins in religious practices, it has now become accepted into more main stream practices in the West such as psychology and counselling.
Why meditate?
Despite the many forms of meditation the overall aim is to calm the mind and body, which has become popular in our increasingly hectic world. The spiritual benefits of meditation are often associated with a sense of being closer to a higher being or enlightenment. Psychological and behavioural benefits include relaxation, greater focus and concentration, creativity, self-awareness or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind. There are also physical changes which occur such as improvements in metabolism, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and brain chemistry. It is also a method for reducing stress and pain.
