In the newest twist in the tale of the honeymoon murder accused his hot shot lawyer, Clare Montgomery, told Westminster Magistrates’ Court her client’s symptoms of post traumatic stress syndrome has worsened. “He cannot travel by car as he has a severe reaction, he doesn’t want to get into a travelling car or go outside. He doesn’t even want to go to the shops on his own.”
The care home owner from Bristol is wanted in South Africa over the honeymoon murder of his wife Anni in a taxi in 2010. At the time of the murder South Africa’s international reputation – in fact Cape Town’s reputation – as holiday destination took one hell of a beating.
But Dewani has been fighting extradition to South Africa with all means to his disposal as he faces charges of conspiracy to murder, murder, kidnapping, robbery and obstruction of the administration of justice after it was claimed by the convicted hit-men that it was Dewani himself who paid them to execute the murder in the Gugulethu township near Cape Town on 13 November 2010.
Ms Montgommery now says Dewani is terrified of travelling by car. He is being treated in a secure mental health hospital for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) before he can be extradited to face the charges. “In his current state it is unthinkable he would be able to plan any escape, let alone effect one,” the woman said.
In an earlier hearing Dewani said he did not want to go to prison in SA because he feared prison rape by prison gang members. He even played the infamous “Pappa wag vir jou” drink drive advertisement in court to try and make his point.
