Did expats vote in vain?

International ballot papers not in South Africa before 9pm tonight will not be counted, says the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC). 17,000 votes were made overseas at 106 South African missions abroad but ballot boxes from at least 10 of them have not been delivered in SA.

Did expats vote in vain?

“The commission made a decision to allow the counting of ballots received by 9pm (on Friday) from international voting stations,” chief electoral officer Mosotho Moepya told reporters at the IEC’s results centre in Pretoria on Thursday.

Should the ballots not reach the counting venue by the set time, they would not be considered. “If they miss the deadline, they are sealed, stored away, and not considered in the elections.”
