Planned for 19 August this year, several civil organisations are joining forces to organise and tens – or even hundreds – of thousand of South Africans to participate in a mass march to the Union Buildings to object against corruption.
Twenty-nine civil organisations and eight unions, including the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), Section 27, the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) and Equal Education are collectively planning the mass demonstration.
The idea for the march was sparked by president Jacob Zuma and his government’s persistent acts of ‘corruption denialism’. It comes in a time when Zuma has been cleared of paying back money for the millions of tax money spent on his private compound at Nkandla.
Section 27’s Mark Heywood is quoted by Eyewitness News as saying corruption has reached a tipping point. “We have a dream of hundreds of thousands of people representing the full spectrum of South African society… That is what we’re setting about to organise in the next two months.”
