Waar is POES? Why not to ask for an “Aftrek Plek” in the Netherlands

I cannot help but laugh when we get Dutch visitors and their kids tell me "Jy het 'n leuke poes" but these are just one of a few that entertain me.

Poes Aftrekplek

Poes Aftrekplek

There are so many little differences between Afrikaans and Dutch, for the most part it’s using words like “HET” instead of “DIE” but then you get to words that have a turned around or completely different meaning.

VRY

How I found out: I was at a braai with my Dutch girlfriend in London and we had a mixture of South African and Dutch friends all at the braai. My girlfriend and I were sitting down on the grass and her Dutch friend came and sat down next to us and asked if she can talk to my girlfriend alone for a bit.

Well… no objection there and I said “Ok, ek VRY jou later”. For reasons unbeknown to me she did not speak to me again (my girlfriend) until we left the braai and the first thing she asked me was “How could you say that in front of everybody?”.

In Afrikaans that would equate to saying “I will kiss you later”, in Dutch it means “I will have sex with you later”, so that’s what the Dutch heard when I said it to her. Hehehehe.

AFTREKPLEK

In AFRIKAANS if you ask for an AFTREKPLEK that would be a place where you can stop next to the road.

In DUTCH if you ask for an AFTREKPLEK you are asking for a place where you can masturbate or be masturbated… hehehehe, needless to say I don’t ask for this when I am in the Netherlands.

POES

This one is a bit more entertaining when kids speak about “POES” but it’s easier to explain, it’s a cat. But in context when they say it it’s super funny. “Jy het ‘n leuke poes” and “I like your poes” and many more scenarios hahaha. But for now, enjoy the videos below all about POES.
