Zuma Jr. court appearance a victory for all

The move to prosecute came only after trade union AfriForum intervened with an application to privately prosecute Duduzane Zuma. Zune now needs to be in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 26 March facing two charges of culpable homicide and one charge of negligent driving.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) initially decided not to prosecute Zuma Jr in connection with a vehicle accident that occurred on 1 February 2014 on the M1 highway in Johannesburg, in which a young, female passenger, Mekelina Dube, had died on impact. After AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit applied to privately prosecute Zuma Jr, the NPA overturned their initial decision and instituted prosecution.

“We view the fact that Duduzane will finally appear in court as a victory. We will monitor the process closely to ensure that justice prevails,” says Adv. Gerrie Nel, Head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.
