Bucket list hotels in South Africa: Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve

There are places in South Africa you won’t believe exist – and one of those magical destinations is Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve in the Cederberg, Western Cape. It is a place you visit once and never forget. Tucked against the warm glow of the protruding natural rock formations in the Cederberg is Kagga Kamma – far from the madness of the city – here stars shine brighter than you’ve ever seen before.

While the natural rock is the most breathtaking feature – Kagga Kamma has one of the most unique accommodation offerings in South Africa. They lure you in with the views and keep you there with cave rooms built into the rock face, or experience an open-air room under a curtain of sparkling stars.

Where it all began…

Willie de Waal, Pieter de Waal and Pieter Loubser purchased the land – as well as three farms surrounding the property on 1986 – creating a 15 000 hectare dream dotted with red sand, fynbos and rocky outcrops, which the Cederberg area in particular is famous for.

They initially erected a a tiny stone cottage for their own personal use. The first chalets were built three years later when the three owners bought more land and turned the entire property into the Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve. They introduced a few animals to compliment the flora in the area back then and now have a thriving reserve teeming with buck, caracals and sometimes even the elusive Cape Leopard.

The property has evolved over the years to become one of South Africa’s premier nature destinations – and one of the most unique accommodation offerings to escape city life.

Between the cave rooms, huts and the lodge there are wild flowers, rock formations, endless blue skies and adventure. The rock pool is Instagram-ready and waiting for patrons to enjoy. There are night sky adventures through the telescope, quad-bike adventures, nature walks, spa facilities and most-intriguing is a tour of rock art paintings from hundreds of years ago.

At night, the dark skies envelop the land and silence takes over. And there, in the middle of nowhere, you have nothing but nature to keep you company. It is the perfect place to get off the grid and become one with your surroundings.
