An increased vocal presence for Jane, the sassy lass on keys, sees her opening the album with ‘A beginning’ – a haunting violin-infused Evanescence-esque track! Quite a subdued start for this group nominated for ‘best live act’ last year in the MTV Africa awards! But fear not, the title track ‘Who do you trust’ is a radio perfect, poppy tune with all the expected electronic energy. I love the cynical lines “Now I see, you made a game out of me.. who do you trust, who do you trust now?”
The formulaic Cassette pop classics continue on this album with ‘Break my heart’, ‘Maybe’, ‘Useless confusion’ and ‘Save this city’. And the beauty of a Cassette ballad is captured with ‘The Backup Plan’ – which needs the volume turned right up to allow the angelic choir to reverberate right through you!
Fighter planes’ is another gorgeous one with raw depth and lyrics of grace and giving “I never wanna waste another day, I couldn’t even if I tried. Nothing’s gonna change the way I feel.”
The harmonising is bolder on this album, produced by Dear Reader, ex-Harris Tweed-er Darryl Torr, who adds some exciting elements! Listen out for the army of instruments scattered across this cassette-scape! It sounds different from album number one and we like how the Cassetters have kept up with the times!
