WOMA is a charitable trust which a clear focus to help women across Africa who have been widowed or disadvantaged through war, famine or Aids. WOMA s made up of a small team experienced in working in Africa. They give small educational grants to individual women in order to help them gain skills that will help them support themselves and their families, lifting them out of poverty and giving them a real chance to fend for themselves.
Doreen Thobekile, who died in London in June 2010, was a wonderful singer and performer and one of the major figures in the South African London community. Doreen was also a great friend and supporter of WOMA from the beginning, appearing with other artists at all their annual fundraising gigs.
Doreen is sorely missed, but her footprint remains and this show on 7 January will pay tribute to her through the live appearance of members of Transglobal Underground, the world’s greatest world fusion band of which Doreen was a member of for a number of years. The night will also feature Doreen’s daughter Ingrid singing some of Doreen’s songs.
Also taking part are Poetic Pilgrimage, an exciting female hip hop and spoken word duo from the UK. They are a rare act, being one of the few Muslim female outfits around who are unafraid to express themselves through the art of rhyme. And DJ Ritu will later in the night be mixing a magical blend of contemporary new releases and world music classics. Ritu is a champion for WOMA and presenter of ‘A World in London’, the weekly BBC Radio London programme which showcases the best of global music.
Friday 7 January, doors open 730pm and tickets are £15. Bookings can be made through the Roundhouse box office.
