I have some very fond memories of the jaffle iron, we always had one when we went camping in Cape Town, but I remember ours being very basic with metal handles. The main thing we used to make was cheese, tomato and onion toasties, over an open fire, however I had a school friend that was a dab hand at creating jaffles from the leftovers in the fridge, most memorable were the spaghetti bolognaise and chicken chow mien ones.
The UK has the answer to the jaffle iron it’s called a Diablo and comes with recipes; it’s very upmarket with plastic handle and cast iron round cups. I looked online to see if I could still buy one of these handy items, in South Africa, and came across a square variety that looked more like a standard sandwich shape, and costs more than the diablo?
