A rescue staffie named Jessie was showered with doggy treats, parlour vouchers and even received the honour of an ‘Animal Hero Award’ for saving her brother from drowning in a pool.
A video, uploaded on 10 April, of Jessie rescuing her 13-year-old Pomeranian brother Chucky from the pool at their home in Johannesburg has garnered almost 100K views.

In the video, you see Chucky losing his step and falling into a large rectangular pool. A short while later Jessie arrives and follows Chucky around the pool trying to pull him out. Jessie struggles to get a grip on the little dog, but he perseveres.
There are a few times Chucky almost makes it out but falls back into the water. Eventually, 34 minutes later, Jessie gets a grip on him and pulls him to safety. She then follows the small dog around to make sure he is ok. All’s well that ends well.
Owners, Byron and Melissa adopted Jessie from the Boksburg SPCA five years ago – and are eternally grateful to the tough Staffie who saved her brother’s life. They have since installed a pool cover and used the video to show how easy it is for dogs to drown. Accidents do happen.
On Tuesday, 20 April the Boksburg SPCA honoured the staffie with the hero award, a hamper of goodies and a pamper voucher. Chucky got thrown a few bones too for being a brave doggie.
Jessie was previously adopted then returned to the SPCA because she didn’t get along with the other dogs in the family. She immediately stole the hearts of her new owners when they saw her, Byron says Jessie is an absolute delight and fitted into their family immediately.
