I now find myself proud of my heritage. I find myself cooking a lot of SA staples and my melktart is well known and appreciated amongst my friends!
I still call myself South African and when feeling a little homesick, I put on a bit of Johnny Clegg and crack open a Savannah. I enjoy the freedom and opportunities I have here and appreciate how different my life would have turned out if I hadn’t left SA and tried my luck abroad.
I do miss many things about South Africa though and I class myself as lucky to have had such an amazing upbringing in such a beautiful country. I love going back and I visit my family once a year. But I have gotten so used to a my life in Scotland and all its freedoms such as being able to walk the streets day and night, very low crime, great public transport and snow sports! I’m afraid this Saffa is now well and truly a Scot!!
