Name: Heath Bateman
SA hometown: Durban
Current hometown: WImbledon
Occupation: Graphic Designer
Being a senior creative designer for one of Europe's largest Media companies tell us what you do and why you think you have the best job?
My title is Senior Creative Designer and I work with the Cross Media Sales team, Events team and for the trade-marketing people within the company. I make sure the brand image is correct and create collateral for all the teams I’ve mentioned, which could include large print pieces, presentations, flyers/invites or creative emailers. I would say it’s the best job because I get involved with so many brands, different people and teams ensuring that there’s always something new. A massive perk of the job is that I get to work at the events we hold as a photographer documenting everything for the sponsors, so I get to party with the bands and celebs at the after shows! Being in the world of creative media, tell us the best bit of advice you have received while on your career journey.

Dynamic Saffa – Heath Bateman

It would probably be to be more assertive and not hang around for things to happen. Also, when it comes to sitting down and creating some artwork, always push the creativity, even if that means you push everything aside and start fresh with a new idea…sometimes that leads to unexpected results, which is a good thing.

What would you say to someone that wants to get into the world of media?

Firstly I’d say think about what you want to get in to…TV, magazines, radio, online or even events. After you’ve decided make sure you know the companies’ brands before going in to an interview. Media is fun, and a great environment to get involved in with some really interesting experiences, so if you’re thinking about it, go for it.

As we know if you work in media you always have to be at the top of your game and know all current trends at all times. How do you stay ahead and what inspires you every day?

I’m constantly trawling the web and looking at the latest stories, events and trends. There are always new creative trends happening, it just starts becoming a case of deciding if any of it could help the business or if its just a little too gimmicky. Working and living in London inspires me constantly.

Having worked in many different locations and at many different star studded events, let us know what your favourite place was and why.

It was recently when I’ve had some of my most surreal experiences. I went to the recent Q and Kerrang! awards and it just didn’t feel real in that I was standing around with people that I listen to and see as role models. What was nice to learn is that not all rock stars are idiots, for the most part they really are just down to earth good people that love music.

You also work with many different brands from all over the world, name a few of your favourites.

I really enjoy music and movies so I’d have to go with Empire magazine, Kerrang!, Mojo and Q. FHM has been fun to work with too.

As a creative you experiment with many different styles of media, in a perfect world, what is next on your creative list?

There are a lot of interesting things being done with 3D light projection and ‘laser graffiti’ which can get ‘painted’ on to buildings or onto objects/products. That is basically a great event to host but it also has a viral factor once a video of it makes youtube, vimeo, facebook or any other sharing/community site. So, that would definitely be an exciting thing to work with.
