The opening scene is 1952, Cape Town, at the Location Cafe – an integral and colourful main character in the film, which captures the prevalent theme of racial divide in line with the pass laws of the time. Armina, co-owner of the cafe, is another strong and central character – an outspoken young woman from a traditional Indian family, who is ahead of her time in mind and spirit and sexual preference.
There is indeed a love element involved, between Armina and a meek and oppressed woman who has never considered that she may indulge in reading poetry or expressing her desires. While the Apartheid angle of oppression and inflicted fear is evident, it is in fact the subtle, beautiful relationships between varying characters that gives this film its SAFTA winning edge (having walked away with an incredible 11 awards in February)!
The UK Charity Gala Premier took place on 5 May, where Zambian / Italian singer songwriter Leonie Casanova (who also has a cameo on the movie as Doris in the cafe) performed Broken, the track she wrote specifically for The World Unseen.
