Trenton and Free Radical hail from assorted places and spaces, with frontman Trenton originally from Johannesburg. Trenton spent his early life in Kenya, Nigeria and the Middle East. Embracing political activism he was involved in the anti-apartheid movement joining the (then banned) African National Congress. At the same time he was getting deep into music and formed electro rockers Anti-Gravity (signed to Sony) who went on to have chart success in South Africa and opened for the Prodigy and Faithless.
Free Radical are Ugandan bassman Kazz (who’s played with P-Funk, Pee Wee Ellis and many others), Zimbabwean percussion maestro Sam (on kit and calabash) plus guitarist Marco from Ibiza, who has laid down his chops for artists like Roots Manuva and Killa Kella.
This quartet are helping rewrite the sound of 21st Century London by fusing the political frustrations of frontman Trenton, with fast-held musical roots in reggae, hip hop, electro and rock. Trenton and Free Radical have created something fresh with their new single Sunless Sundays where Trenton laments about the UK’s serious lack of sunshine this summer over a shankin’ beat.
They are working on their debut album with producer Dean James (Nitin Sawhney, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly) and help from Craigie Dodds (Sugarbabes, Natty, One Eskimo). Trenton also works closely with Love Music Hate Racism and recently project directed an “LMHR All Stars” trip to the Sziget Festival in Hungary.
Fans of Jamaican riddims, African beats, Soul, Rap & Rock will undoubtably find something here that ignites their inner groove. Big things are on the way for Trenton and Free Radical.
