The reaction comes shortly after the announcement this week that the popular Saffa comedian (32) will replace ever so popular Stewart (52).
The question was posed on social media: Can Trevor Noah ever fill Jon Stewart’s big shoes for ‘Indecision 2016’?
The surprise choice of Noah weeks of speculation about Stewart’s possible successor. Stewart announced his departure on 10 February in an emotional address at the end of an episode.
But some Americans are not too keen to see Noah take over. One posted: ARGH how can we have a S African doing the political comedy commentary during a presidential election year?!?!?!?!?!?!?! This is a plot/ploy by the Republicans. It was proven that Jon Stewart’s influence secured morevotes for the democrats in the last elections. So the Republicans elbowed in someone shit so that they won’t lose more votes in 2016.
Others said this replacement is even more important than the decision to elect a new American president. In fact Noahdoes inherit the task of leading the show’s award-winning presidential election coverage in the lengthy walkup to the 2016 race.
The son of a black Xhosa mother and white Swiss father, Noah made his debut on “The Daily Show” last December with a segment that poked fun at cliched American images of Africa, where he lived as child.
With a reference to the “hands up” gesture that was a symbol of protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, where a police officer shot an unarmed black man in August 2014, Noah said: “I never thought I’d be more afraid of police here than in South Africa. It kind of made me nostalgic for the old days back home.”
Meanwhile, amidst the hype of his appointment, Noah has been facing a mud slinging match about some of his earlier tweets. Some say it might even disqualify him from finally bagging the position. His critics now say these tweets prove that he is a racist and a chauvinist.
Here are some of his tweets about women and Jews.
