With the help of Deli Spices and Spar, BraaiBoy kicked off the attempt on 23 August at Supersport Park, Centurion. The event was open to the public, in fact BraaiBoy wanted all the support he could get, and encouraged everyone to pop by and come say “Hi” at any time of the day – or night. Needless to say, the attempt grabbed South Africa’s attention with thousands of people dropping in to offer words of encouragement – some even setting up camp to support their hero for the duration of the attempt. This resulted in a carnival atmosphere with DJ’s, a Jacuzzi (to cool down from the heat of the fire and the sun) and many other awesome activities. For those who could not make it to the event, many different social media channels were set up to ensure everyone could get in on the action – and boy did they – Twitter exploded with messages of encouragement and support at regular intervals of the day and night,BraaiBoyGWR even trended on the South African trends map. There were also a couple of live “Google Hangouts” where up to 9 people at a time could have a chance to chat to BraaiBoy in real-time. Finally on the evening of 26 August 2012, after braaing for 62 hours, 6 minutes and 16 seconds, a tired but triumphant BraaiBoy put down his tongs and received his Guinness Book of Records Certificate, stating the he successfully achieved the longest continuous barbecue in history. We had the official Guinness World Records Limited representative, Rob Mollow, flown in to ensure that this record becomes official. Will he defend his crown next year? We’ll have to get back to you on that one.
