Police told netwerk24 the robbers took cellphones, laptops and jewellery while CCTV cameras at the family’s home showed footage of the three balaclava-wearing men with 9mm firearms getting out of a white Toyota Avanza and running in through the gate.
The men slipped in when one of the children opened the electric security gate to let some guests in. Three men then held up three guests in the driveway who had just arrived.
Meanwhile in Pretoria two robbers were shot dead in a botched robbery. It happened on Sunday when police reacted to a tip-off that a blue BMW would be used in a robbery by a gang who were planning to follow visitors to Johannesburg from OR Tambo Airport.
When the female driver arrived at the residence with her guests they were confronted by the gang as they drove into a driveway. The men demanded jewellery and travel bags but police who were patrolling the area spotted the BMW. A shootout ensued when they attempted to arrest three men. Two were killed and one wounded.
During Saturday’s braai robbery in Linden one of the women who were threatened with a pistol said the men were looking for the safe while they were made to lie on the ground. When they went into another room, she hit the alarm system’s panic button.
Her children and husband were with other guests at the fire outside. The robbers confiscated her husband’s gun while attacking him by hitting him on the head. They left with the goods before help could arrive.
Linden police confirmed an increase in house robberies in the area since March this year.
