The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says these arrests were for various offences including drunken driving, speeding, reckless and negligent driving.
The RTMC also indicates that more than 13,000 drivers have received fines for failing to wear seat belts and using cellphones while driving.
“Traffic has started building up on South African roads as holiday makers make their way to industrial centres.
Traffic volumes reached more than 1200 per hour on the N3 towards Gauteng,” said RTMC spokesperson, Simon Zwane.
He said motorists are advised to keep their lights, reduce speed and increase the following distances when driving in wet conditions.
“Traffic law enforcers are keeping a watchful eye on the roads,” Zwane said.
