A hare raising tale

Could it be the same rabbit that was removed from First National Bank's (FNB) thorn tree and then got killed at Marikana with disastrous consequences that made its way into Madiba's right ear? If so, this little menace should be made extinct without any democratic interference. No sooner was the tiny rabbit cast in the right ear of the statue of former president Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings in Pretoria discovered when it reminded of the little ANC terrorist conjured up by the Nationalist Party (NP) in the early '80, supposedly to be seen sitting snugly in the thorn tree logo of the new First National Bank after breaking away from UK parent bank Barclays.

A hare raising tale

At the time NP supporters warned that the little rabbit (it could only be seen with the help of some imagination, or ganja) represented the then banned ANC. At the time the Nats described people banking with FNB as ‘traitors’. FNB bosses had to change the logo to rid themselves of the nasty little ideological troublemaker.

Then, when people expected no more trouble, the little bugger was blamed for the Marikana massacre. Mineworkers at Lonmin’s Marikana mine said they believe the killing of a rabbit was the reason the shooting happened. Surviving mineworkers claimed that the muti (medicine) man told them they would be invincible against the police but also warned them not to kill a rabbit. Someone obviously did.

Just as soon came the rabbit’s resurrection – nicely hidden in the right ear of Madiba at the Union Buildings. The sculptors insist there was no hidden meaning behind the rabbit’s re-appearance, but we know better. This little ANC rabbit is intent on causing trouble. All we can hope now is that the Chinese discover some form of aphrodisiac in rabbit hair or teeth. Then we can be sure we will see the end of the species.
