National police minister Nathi Mthethwa is now trying to prevent a commission of inquiry instituted by the DA provincial government into bad policing in Khayelitsha. He has written to Western Cape Premier Helen Zille requesting a meeting to discuss her announcement of the inquiry into allegations of police inefficiency.
He said: “The meeting, once confirmed, would also focus on understanding the rationale by the Premier on why such a commission of inquiry is the most appropriate mechanism to establish the veracity of the allegations of police inefficiency and a breakdown in relations between the community and the police in Khayelitsha.”
Mthethwa said he wanted to prevent an “intergovernmental dispute” and that “organs of state are constitutionally bound to co-operate with each other in mutual trust” and “good faith”, but it rather sounds if the police chief is scared of what an inquiry might find.
One should wonder if the minister is concerned about crime or his party’s image as national rulers of the county.
Meanwhile it is reported that incidences of violence in the Khayelitsha district are completely out of hand.
