In this day South Africans celebrate Heritage Day, a special day for Saffas to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions. And what better tradition to celebrate than braaiing? So gatheri around your fires to celebrate Heritage/Braai Day.
Here are a few facts about Heritage/Braai Day to consider:
- National Heritage/Braai Day is a public holiday where Saffas across race, language, region and religion can share one common heritage.
- It is called many things: Chisa Nyama, Braai and Ukosa. Although the ingredients may differ, the one thing that never changes is that when we have something to celebrate we light fires, and prepare great feasts.
- Braai Day is similar to annual celebrations cherished by other leading nations of the world; Thanksgiving for Americans, St Patricks Day for the Irish, Bastille Day for the French and Australia Day for Australians (although we don’t really like the Aussies).
- This is a noble cause, which will contribute to strengthening South Africa as a nation.
