Gordhan is tabling his budget in parliament today and far the news has not been lekker. Government is increasing it’s excise duty on spirits by R3,94 from R48,13 to R52,07. Even the more sophisticated “bubbly” drinkers will feel the squeeze as Sparkling wine is also going to cost you more with a 78 cent increase.
Planning a road trip? Well, government is increases fuel levies as well with government adding an additional fuel levy of 30c/litre to your fuel bill.
It seems all of this is happening because treasury and the SA Revenue Service reported lower than expected tax revenue for the 2015/2016 tax year with R11,6-billion less than anticipated entering SARS coffers.
So – somebody is going to pay – and it will be those who are planning a road trip or a night on the town as excise duties on alcoholic beverages go bonkers. Government wants to raise close to R10-billion extra.
Kak en betaal – dis die wet van Transvaal.
