A video of school violence posted on Facebook on Sunday and shared almost 27000 times has jolted the Gauteng Education Department into action asking that steps be taken against a Krugerlaan School pupil and possible his teacher.
The video, posted by Nicolaas Putter, the father of the boy being assaulted – apparently because he has a tong ring – shows the attack while an adult hangs around idly in the background.
Putter said he posted the video to raise awareness of violence at the school in Vereeniging, which are often reported but almost never dealt with.
In a statement released by the Gaurteng education department spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane, she says MEC Panyaza Lesufi has seen the footage and is awaiting a report from the school with details of the incident and the identifies of those involved.
The clip shows an unidentified boy in school uniform repeatedly slapping and punching his school-mate. Pupils laugh and some record the incident on their cellphones as the victim walks away with his hands on his jaw.
Sekhonyane says while they condemn the incident, they do not know for sure if the adult in the video is in fact a teacher.
