Cargo Ship, Felicity Ace caught on fire at least two weeks ago. Around 22 crew members were taken off the ship after the ship caught alight. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The 200 meter long cargo ship carried $401 million worth of cars

The cargo ship is said to have carried a larger number of luxury vehicles which include, Lamborghinis, Porche’s, and Volkswagen. Porche did not confirm how many vehicles were on the ship as reported by People.

The number of cars shipped by Porsche is not available. Volkswagen has relayed that the amount of money lost on their cars is estimated to be around $335 million. This damage, however, will be covered by insurance.

Presently, it is not certain how many cars and what models of the cars were on board the cargo ship but European carmakers said that Porche customers were being informed about the incident as reported by The Guardian.

Fears of ocean pollution

While there is tons of damage in relation to the number of cars on board the ship, there were also 2000 metric tons of fuel and 2000 metric tons of oil on the cargo ship. Authorities feared that this could pollute the ocean. Thus far, only a patch of oil has been spotted.

The spot where the ship sank is still being monitored by the Portuguese air force to be on the lookout for any signs of pollution. Since there is no exact explanation for the fire, captain Joao relayed that electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries might have caught on fire.

In addition, the ship was being towed before it eventually sank in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. A small patch of oil has been spotted and was hosed loose from the spot.
