Cocaine on detour gets stuck in SA

It's a long way for drugs to travel - from South America to the UK via South Africa but apparently that's the route drug smugglers like to take.

A drive to change names associated with apartheid, and instead celebrate anti-struggle heroes, has caused deep national divisions with supporters saying that it is long overdue. Custom officials have seized cocaine worth an estimated 7 million rand at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Originally from South America, it was destined for Heathrow.

SARS Spokesperson, Luther Lebelo says the luggage and all its contents were inspected yesterday after the airline failed to locate the owner of the bag. Officials discovered 19 compressed blocks wrapped in a brown tape, and seven plastic bags containing a cream coloured substance.

Lebelo said they suspected the cocaine originally came from South America.

The narcotics were handed over to police for further investigation.

This discovery follows that of 40,000 Viagra tablets earlier the same day at the Johannesburg International Mail Centre. The tablets‚ contained in two boxes sent from Hong Kong‚ “were falsely declared as plastic toys”.
