“Doctor” Pallo, I presume!

When the famous journalist Sir Henry Morton Stanley traversed central Africa in search of explorer Dr David Livingstone who was thought to be missing at the time, his words on meeting up with the famous medical missionary was: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." He need not have presumed anything else because in those days gentleman did not invent their academic records. In those days it was a matter of honour. Well, we are not 100% sure yet, but now our former minister of arts and culture and ANC stalwart Pallo Jordan's academic background is being severly questioned.

“Doctor” Pallo, I presume!

We used to routinely refer to the honourable minister as “Dr” for years. But now South Africa’s Sunday newspaper, the Sunday Times, are claiming that the “Doc” have never even finished university (his government CV says he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the London School of Economics).

In fact, the Sunday Times found that there was no record of Jordan ever having received a PhD or even having had an honourary doctorate bestowed on him. The newspaper says he had no formal tertiary academic qualification at all.

Jordan’s CV, titled Zweledinga Pallo Jordan Dr, states he studied at Wisconsin-Madison and obtained a postgraduate degree from the London School of Economics (LSE). The registrar at LSE says they have no records of Jordan having attended the college.

When asked by the Sunday Times journalist to provide documentation pertaining to his qualifications, Jordan allegedly hinted at a deal: that the journalist be granted the honour of writing his memoirs in exchange for dropping the story.

We are not calling the honourable Dr and ANC stalwart a liar, we are merely asking for more evidence. Show us the degree! You already have the money…
