The Eastern Cape also had the highest number of education districts (4 out of 8) that recorded a pass mark of between 50% and 59%.
Announcing the outcome of the 2016 Senior Certificate Exams on Wednesday evening, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, said the figures she announced excluded so-called ‘progressed learners’. ‘Progressed learners’ are pupils who failed Grade 11 twice and were promoted to Grade 12 without meeting the passing criteria.
Motshekga said more must be done to assist those progressed learners in the Eastern Cape where a mere 27% had passed.
The best performing education district in the Eastern Cape was the Cradock district, according to the Minister.
Meanwhile, the Free State was the best performing province, with a leading 93.2% pass rate followed by the Western Cape with 87.7% and Gauteng with 87%.
Meanwhile, Estern Cape Department Education MEC, Mandla Makhuphula, will announce the province’s results in East London today (Thursday).
He will be accompanied at the event by the Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle.
