Charley Boorman’s South African Adventure sees the seasoned wanderluster traverse over 6,000 miles of this beautiful country on his trusty BMW GS Adventure motorcycle.
Due to air Wednesdays at 8pm from 9 January 2013, the four-part series sees Charley facing nature and his fears face on, whilst getting to know the locals and witnessing some true wonders of the world – sometimes more closely than he might have hoped!
Starting his journey in Cape Town, Charley sets the tone for the expedition by abseiling above the city from the peak of the iconic Table Mountain. Following this he embarks on a journey of extremes that includes cage diving with deadly Great White Sharks in the rough Atlantic seas; navigating the majestic yet incredibly precarious Sani Pass to reach the icy peak; tracking lions on foot in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park; and searching the ocean floor for the perfect diamond in the ship wreck-strewn West Coast. His incredible trip culminates in a huge motorbike convoy down to Signal Hill in Cape Town accompanied by over 250 local riders.
For this epic trip Charley teamed up once again with producer/director Russ Malkin, with whom he has undertaken previous adventures though Canada, Africa and Asia. The expedition was designed to really get under the skin of South Africa – from north to south, east to west – to allow viewers an insight into the challenging adventures and amazing characters of this majestic country.
Charley Boorman commented: “I fell in love with South Africa the very first time I came here. The country is one of the most beautiful places on earth: rich in gastronomy, adventure opportunities and fantastic people. I feel so privileged and excited to have been able to return to really explore it further and to spend time with the fantastic people. There’s also no better way to end a trip than with a massive convoy of bikes as we rode into Cape Town!”
Juan Herrada, Marketing Manager for South African Tourism says: “Viewers already familiar with South Africa will appreciate why our country was an obvious choice for Charley’s next expedition. Those who have yet to go are in for a an exciting ride as they watch these two adventurers come face to face with South Africa’s phenomenal culture, landscape, history and people.”
