Data from Crime Stats SA, an online database run by Meerkat Data Management, suggest worst 10 precincts for hijacking in the country are largely found in Gauteng.
Last year the SAPS reported 11,129 cases of carjacking, and 989 cases of truck hijacking, with Gauteng accounting for 54% and 55% respectively.
The places you are more likely to have your car hijacked – in order of disappearance – (with the number of hijackings in brackets) are:
1 Booysens, Gauteng (224)
2 Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal (203)
3 Moffatview, Gauteng (157)
4 Roodepoort, Gauteng (138)
5 Rietgat, Gauteng (121)
6 Dobsonville, Gauteng (118)
7 Dawn Park, Gauteng (117)
8 Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal (113)
9 Springs, Gauteng (110)
10 Sydenham, KwaZulu Natal (108)
Most vehicles also get stole in Gauteng. In 2014, the SAPS reported 56,616 cases with 48% of the total being stolen in Gauteng.

Car or motor vehicle theft
1 Brooklyn, Gauteng (725)
2 Berea, KwaZulu-Natal (721)
3 Booysens, Gauteng (709)
4 Roodepoort, Gauteng (696)
5 Honeydew, Gauteng (647)
6 Durban Central, KwaZulu-Natal (623)
7 Benoni, Gauteng (580)
8 Wierdabrug, Gauteng (573)
9 Johannesburg Central, Gauteng (572)
10 Lyttelton, Gauteng (570)

BusinessTech.co.za says the data for 2014’s stats covers April 2013 to March 2014 – and because of this, is at least 6 months out of date. They also quote Africacheck.org who warns that crime data can be inaccurate as some crimes go unreported or because the SAPS data is not unaudited.
