As the world got all excited about the birth of Britain’s (possible) future king who was born on Monday at London’s St Mary’s Hospital, we can merely wonder why there is all this excitement?
In a modern world anchored – mostly – into the roots of democratic principles, royalty is an outdated affair. Royalty should be today just as unthinkable as, let’s say, burning people at the stake for witchcraft 500 years ago.
Back in SA, we also have kings in many of the tribes. A smattering of their influence was seen in the recent royal – used meaning ‘large’ – bugger-up with regards to Mandela’s dead children’s burial sites. This too should be something of the past.
At the moment royalty is good for tourism to London. Maybe this is why the brats are treated like celebrities. God forbid, London’s landmarks, including the London Eye, lit up in the national colours of red, white and blue, and London had a party atmosphere all of Monday night. Think logically and it should be a reason for national mourning that people can still think this way in the 21st century.
