Getting SA ‘on track’

It's loooong overdue but at last South Africa is waking up to the need of expanding its public transport network. New, modern and safe commuter trains will start to be on the tracks by next year. The announcement was made by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi who told the media in Pretoria the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) will roll out the trains as part of a revitalisation programme. "Prasa will spend R51 billion over the next 10 years to procure 600 top class trains for... South Africa."

Sapa reports a total of 580 of these would be manufactured locally, at a new R1bn factory to be built in Dunnotar, outside Nigel, in Ekurhuleni. “The 600,000 square metre manufacturing facility is designed to house the manufacturing plant, a training facility and a fully fledged industrial park.”
The project would create 8,088 direct jobs, plus more indirect work opportunities.
Muthambi said.
