“May you learn that careening down a hill in a shopping cart, swimming with great white sharks and playing with poisonous snakes are not the safest pastimes, and that you will probably not be one of the 7 people in the world who get paid to do those things.”
Or:
“May your hair, your teeth, your face-lift, your abs and your stocks not fall; and may your blood pressure, your triglycerides, your cholesterol, your white blood count and your mortgage interest not rise!”
In SA that’s a tough one. Everything that is bad seems to rise (like the crime rate) and everything that is good (like employment) seems to fall.
But let’s stop all these negative thoughts right now and let’s see what some of the greatest writers on earth had to say about the New Year.
Oscar Wilde:
“Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account.”
P. J. O’Rourke:
“The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk. This drunkenness culminates on New Year’s Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you’re married to.”
We kind of like the last one…
2013 is a change for us all to make new start. We know that the New Year can turn out to be pretty much like the old one – unless YOU change that. Ignore and let go of your fear, take a chance and do something new. Scary? You can do it because it’s your life and you can choose how you want to live it.
May what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them – and may our home country prosper.
