A 16-year-old suspect was arrested and will faces charges of attempted hijacking and kidnapping after he was caught offloading learners on the N2 highway in Cape Town on Monday, 14 June.
The teen hijacked the blue Toyota Avanza full of learners shortly before he was apprehended by police. According to Cape Town’s safety and security officer, JP Smith, “The vehicle was hijacked with learners inside and hijackers then attempted to offload learners on side of the road which is when they were caught by City Law Enforcement.”
The incident unfolded when school ended at 1.45pm. Leap Law Enforcement Officers were activated to assist on the corner of Spine Road and the N2 highway in response to a highjacked vehicle and armed suspects.

“Whilst approaching they observed from a distance that the suspects were offloading 17 school children on the N2, direction Cape Town,” said Smith.
As soon as the suspects saw officers approaching they left the vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby bushes.
“LE Stabilization Unit members reacted and responded immediately resulting in the apprehension of 1 suspect who was then arrested.The suspect was positively identified by the victim of the highjacked Vehicle was transport and detained at Harare SAPS,” confirmed Smith.
