Former world champion Mick Fanning of Australia was lucky to be alive after emerging unscathed from his encounter with a Great White during the final of the World Surf League event at Supertubes. The shark knocked him off his board, but did not manage to get his jaws around the Aussie, despite the Aussie hitting the animal in the back.
The Championship was immediately called off with Fanning and fellow Australian Julian Wilson awarded equal second place.
Kouga Municipality spokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall says their law enforcement officers are currently patrolling the town’s beaches and urging everyone to stay out of the water. Randall says a call is expected to be made later to when the swimming and surfing ban will be lifted.
