Madiba day at Westminster Abbey

A National Service of Thanksgiving to Celebrate the Life and Work of Nelson Mandela, former President of the Republic of South Africa, will be held at Westminster Abbey on Tuesday 11th February 2014 at 12 noon. The date has a special significance. Nelson Mandela walked out of Victor-Verster Prison in Paarl on 11th February 1990 after 27 years behind bars, most of it sentenced to hard labour in the notorious Robben Island prison camp off Cape Town.

Madiba day at Westminster Abbey

His release followed the relaxation of apartheid by South African President FW de Klerk and paved the way for the country’s first multi-racial elections in April 1994 when Mr Mandela became President.

Mr Mandela died on 5 December last year.

Attendance at the Abbey’s service will be by invitation only.
