Former KwaZulu-Natal Mayor Mahlaba has been issued an R20 000 fine for an assault dating back to 2020.
The incident is said to have occurred in Aviary Hill in Newcastle. Since the high court had issued an interdict on workers to stop working in the area, Mahlaba and other residents confronted the workers to stop working.
Mahlaba takes matters into his own hands
When the workers wouldn’t stop what they were doing, Mahlaba saw it fit to assault the workers. Mahlaba hasn’t done this on his own but it is assumed that his bodyguards have done the dirty work for him.
This incident came about when workers were digging trenches meant for fiber cables which have interrupted the water supply and electricity flow.
It has come to the attention that the workers were not only physically harmed but their tools were taken from them and the fiber cables have been damaged as well.
All men involved charged
All men under the Mayor’s instruction and the mayor were charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.
At this time, Mahlaba would either be paying a hefty 20k fine or two years imprisonment. What the former mayor would get is unclear at this moment.
