Minister stays on gravy plane

Reckless use of public funds during lengthy stays at expensive hotels and guesthouses - that is what South Africa's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, is being accused of, but the her boss, Jacob Zuma, says the report of the Public Protector regarding this is still being processed. Nothing can be done for now.

Minister stays on gravy plane

A full week ago, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said Zuma should consider reprimanding Joemat-Pettersson for the reckless use of public funds, but Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj says the Presidency had noted some media reports, including one alleging that the minister returned earlier from Sweden at the request of the Presidency in order to assist with plans for the President’s private wedding ceremony in 2009.

He said the Presidency was not aware of the said request.  “We urge that space be allowed for proper processing of the report and for the minister to be given the opportunity to respond to the President on the entire report.  “Speculation will not assist the process,” he said.
